Is it necessary to memorize scripture? How important is it? What if I have a bad memory? What if I'm too busy to memorize anything? First of all, we are called to memorize scripture. Colossians 3:16 says to "let the word of Christ dwell in you richly". Deuteronomy 6:4-9 tells us to bind God's law on our forehead, teach it to our kids, talk about it wherever we go, write them on our doorposts, and make it a part of our lives. So in other words, we must know scripture before we can teach it or apply it in our lives. But as a mom with bad memory, I know this is not an easy task. Here are 7 tips to help you with scripture memorization.
1. Start Small Don't start with trying to memorize the entire book of Acts. Choose a scripture that is short, yet powerful and meaningful to you. 2. Say It Out Loud Say the verse out loud several times throughout the day. 3. Write It Down Writing things by hand helps the brain remember the content. Write the scripture in your journal. Practice your handwriting skills by writing the verses over and over. 4. Listen To It. Listen to the audio bible while you are driving or while you are exercising or cleaning your house. You can also record yourself reciting the scripture, then listen to it through out the day. 5. Post-It Method Take the scripture with you by writing the verse on post-it notes and putting them up everywhere. You can put them in the bathroom mirror, fridge, car, desk, computer monitor, or you can even make it the background on your phone. 6. Use Flashcards The flashcard method is an effective way to memorize anything. You can write the verse numbers on one side of the card and the actual verse on the other side. You can ask someone to quiz you. 7.Translate The Verse Into Another Language If you are bilingual, it will help you become more familiar with what you are memorizing if you translate it. It makes it easier to remember.
