Home school Groups In The Houston Area
When people are considering homeschool for their children, their first concern is socialization. However, there are many ways that your children can socialize with other people. One of those ways are to find homeschool groups in your area.
The city of Houston and its surrounding areas are very "homeschool friendly", filled with many homeschool groups. I highly recommend that you join the groups in your area and start participating. Being a part of many of these groups are essential, especially when you are new to home school. I found great friends and much more important, a great support system. Below are a list of homeschool groups that I am aware of, separated by location. If you know of other groups, please share in the comments below so that I may add them to the list. I hope that this blesses you in some way! NORTHEAST HOUSTON

**This is a secular curriculum.**
Our budget is limited, so I always try to find free resources when I plan our homeschool curriculum. Since I used to teach high school Spanish in public school, I decided to create my own scope-and-sequence for Spanish 1. I didn't write the individual lessons. I simply searched online and organized them below. Use what is useful to you and skip what is not. I suggest that your student keep a notebook or binder with notes and handout print outs. I recommend to make it a requirement to write notes for all video lessons. Recording grades will depend on your state homeschool laws, so please do your research. For my student, I will grade certain assignments as daily grades and some as test grades (like the projects, etc). You can find already-made quizzes on Quizlet, Google, or TeachersPayTeachers. Week 1 for our family starts the first full week of August. We also have scheduled weeks that we plan to take off throughout the school year. Make sure to adjust the “culture” section to your school calendar so that the holidays match the week that you are on. The culture videos on this schedule are based on our school calendar starting the 1st week of August and our scheduled weeks off. I hope that this helps and blesses your family. Please leave comments if you have any questions, tips or suggestions! *Free e-Workbook

Scope and Sequence for U.S. History 1 Curriculum (Before Civil War)

*This course is secular and covers both the "good" and the "ugly" side of history.
We decided to break U.S. History into two years and really take the time to dive into each era. We started U.S. History 1 (Before the Civil War) in 8th grade, and plan to complete Part 2 for 9th grade. Our state homeschool requirements are very flexible, so make sure that you check the requirements in your own state. Our budget is limited, so I always try to find free resources when I plan our curriculum. Since history is my favorite subject, I decided to create my own. I didn't write the individual lessons. I simply searched online and organized them below. Use what is useful to you and skip what is not. I suggest that your student keep a notebook or binder with notes and handout print outs. Recording grades will depend on your state homeschool laws, so please do your research. For my student, I will grade certain assignments as daily grades and some as test grades (like the essays, etc). You can find already-made quizzes on Quizlet, Google, or TeachersPayTeachers. We will also combine U.S. History with American Literature and read living books to compliment each era. I will list the books we plan to read. Find books that are of interest to your student and at their reading level. Most lessons require writing, so we will not be using a separate Writing curriculum. I will address grammar issues as we go along. I also believe that watching movies, although not always 100% accurate, give a great visual to learning history. I included the movies that we plan to watch. Use your discretion and pre-view them before showing them to your student. Also, the "Mid-Term Exam" is based on the end of our first semester. You may have to adjust it according to your school calendar. We also follow a 36 week school schedule. My hope is that this will help and bless your family! Please feel free to post questions, comments, or suggestions below.

It has now been a few weeks since classes have been canceled due to the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic. At first, most thought it was temporary and were taking the time at home as an extended Spring Break. Then it was extended another week or two. By this point everyone started sharing 2,184 ways to homeschool with jam-packed, Pinterest style experiments. Beautiful, color-coded schedules were being shared, keeping the kids busy from sunrise to sundown. For some families, those ideas work great. But for the rest of us, it may not be realistic. Some families still have both parents working out of the home, or are working from home but their job is very demanding and they cannot leave their computer all day. I came up with an easy, basic, minimal homeschool schedule and curriculum that can be completed independently by your student. Depending on the student and their age, you may need to adjust, but that is the beauty of homeschool. This schedule does NOT have to be completed in any particular order or time of day. I have one kid that wakes up around noon, eats then plays an hour of video games, then completes his school work with no breaks. I have another kid that wakes up at the crack of dawn (practically, but around 7 AM) and does one subject, then takes a 15-30 minute break to play, and repeats this until all his school work is done. You may also throw in chores, exercise, music, art, other electives and technology as part of their school day. The subjects suggested below are just to cover the "core" subjects at a minimum, to get you through this pandemic, without your child falling behind.
MATH Elementary: Review math facts (addition, subtraction multiplication, division) with flash cards for 15-20 minutes every day (adjust accordingly). If you don't have any flashcards, then make them using index cards, construction paper, or regular notebook paper. Optional- add worksheet practice, add math online games, etc. Middle School/ High School: Review math facts the same way as mentioned above. Add a lesson per day using KhanAcademy. They can go straight into the math concept they were learning while in regular school. READING Elementary: Read a book at their current reading level for 15 minutes. Alternate between silent reading and reading outloud. Have them listen to an audiobook, above their reading level but still age appropriate, for 15-30 minutes. Always check in YouTube to see if there is a recording of the book you are reading before actually buying the audio format. Many times you can find it for free. Middle School/ High School: Read for a minimum of 30 minutes. If they are a struggling reader, or they simply hate it, then I suggest finding a book-to-movie of one they have already "seen". You may also allow them to read along while they listen to the audiobook. ( Optional: After each chapter, or each day they read, have them tell you a summary. You may have them write it down in a notebook too. When they have finished reading the book, they can complete a Book Report. There are many creative project ideas in Pinterest or TeachersPayTeachers. WRITING Elementary: Write daily journal entries and draw a picture. Middle/High School: Write Covid19 Journals using Google Slides, where they must attach at least 1 image/video/sketch/picture and answer reflection questions. CLICK HERE FOR AN EXAMPLE. HISTORY/ SCIENCE Have your kids watch a movie, video, or documentary every day. They may all watch together. You may alternate days with Science. They can also alternate from watching movies and go on Virtual Fieldtrips. I suggest one place for "Science" per day and one place for "History" per day. Optional: Write a summary, take notes during the video, compare & contrast, do a craft project, etc. CLICK HERE FOR NETFLIX VIDEOS. CLICK HERE FOR YOU TUBE VIDEOS. CLICK HERE FOR VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS. One thing I want to add is that everybody handles stress differently. Some children will act out and refuse to do their school work. Keep in mind that their life has been turned upside down too. They miss their routine, they miss their teachers, and miss the interactions with their friends. Kids, even the older teenagers, do not know how to process their feelings. This pandemic can cause them trauma as well. So keep that in mind before getting frustrated and losing your patience when they are not "following" the schedule. Your priority is to keep them safe and their state of mind healthy. Try to be flexible and allow them to sleep in, start school after doing something "fun" as a family, etc. The "academic" stuff is important, yes, but not to cause a war over it. Pick and choose your battles, especially with your teens. Focus on building your relationships first, increasing your family unity, and then do the school work. I hope that these suggestions are helpful. If you have any questions or suggestions, please post below. Have a blessed day!

When I first started teaching public school, the first thing that overwhelmed me were all the different acronyms and terminology that were used, as if they were common knowledge. I felt as if I needed an interpreter just to get through staff developments or meetings. It seemed like by the time I had a grip on them (10 years later), I took a drastic turn in my life and entered the world of home school. And guess what? I became overwhelmed, once again, with all the acronyms and terminology used in all the home-school Facebook groups that I joined. I found myself searching on google and taking notes, just so that I could "blend in"! Below are the 8 different curriculum types for homeschooling, with explanations and links. Keep in mind that these are not the only curriculum available. There are a ton more! These are just the most commonly used within their type.
1. Traditional Education This type of home-school most resembles the traditional ways of a public classroom. It is sometimes referred to as "boxed curriculum" because the publishers "box" everything needed, such as check boxes for daily work, textbooks, workbooks, exams, answer sheets, teacher manuals, and manipulatives. The lesson plans are already organized by the day and the teacher (parent) just needs to read from the script and follow instructions. Using a "boxed" curriculum is ideal, especially when you are new to teaching. One drawback is that they tend to be the most expensive option, some ranging from $100 to $1,000 per child! If you are on a budget, you may also find these items used on Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Half-Price book stores, or libraries. Here is a list of some of the popular traditional education curriculum (the estimated costs are based on 4th grade pricing):
2. Classical Education According to welltrainedmind.com, classical education has a three part process. The first few years are the "grammar stage", where the student spends time memorizing facts. The middle school years are the "logic age" where they start applying it to their subjects. Then the high school years are the "rhetoric stage" where they used all that they have built on to express their own conclusions. While there are several curriculum publishers that follow this model, the most known is Classical Conversations.
3. Charlotte Mason Philosophy According to simplycharlottemason.com, this type of curriculum method teaches the "whole" person, not just the child's mind. Instead of using textbooks, they use living books. Children are encouraged to be outside in nature and learn about artists and composers. I encourage you to read her book to learn more about this education model. Charlotte Mason itself is not a curriculum though, but there are many that are Charlotte Mason "inspired". You can teach this method for free, but it will require some work on your part to find and put together your lessons.
4. Unit Studies Unit studies are a collection of activities that are tied to a theme. With unit studies, you are able to incorporate all subjects, such as math, science, language arts, and social studies, within the theme. This method is popular because they can be modified to each grade level and are a hands-on learning approach. This type of curriculum can range from free to fairly inexpensive. The drawback to this method is that it will require more planning and prepping on your part.
5. Computer-Based Home School Computer-Based learning is similar to the textbook method, except instead of paper books, your child's curriculum is through an online company or CD-ROM. This method works great for your visual and independent learners. This method is also a good option if you work from home and are unable to do the "teaching". The price will range from free to moderate to expensive.
6. Virtual Public School Virtual public school is not necessarily home-school. It is just public school completed at home. The parent has no input on the curriculum being used, the content being covered, or the pace of the class. The student also has to meet the state requirements, including state testing. This option is still great for many students. They offer actual teachers that are available to help. Not only is the option completely free, but some districts offer free internet, laptops and supplies. Below are the 2 options available for our school district.
7. Unschooling This is an informal learning style that promotes learner-chosen activities as the primary path to learning. If something peaks your child's interest or curiosity, then you dive into that topic. This can include research, hands-on activities, etc. It is similar to unit studies, but the child directs the learning and the topics of interest. The best part about unschooling is that the child doesn't "feel" like they are doing school, but they are learning, and most likely cover all subjects too. The drawback to this style of curriculum is that it does take effort from the parent to keep track of what is being learned and make sure to spin everything into a learning opportunity. 8. Eclectic Homeschooling This approach to homeschooling is when you do a little bit of this and a little bit of that, until you cover all subjects. Our home-school is very much eclectic. We do some things in a traditional way, some are Charlotte Mason inspired, our writing curriculum is classical, some computer-based learning, some unit studies, and a lot of unschooling. I like the freedom to choose the best part of each "approach" that best fits each of my children's learning style and personality. Each one of my boys learn different and so they use different things for every subject. Here are a few other curriculums that we have used in the past, that are not mentioned in the other sections:
Always remember that there is no ONE WAY to learn! Every child is different and their education should accommodate their individual style. Also, don't feel that you need to be married to a curriculum that you chose and started at the beginning of the year. If you find that it is not a good fit, then change it! |
